DETROIT (WXYZ) - An exclusive new WXYZ/Detroit Free Press poll confirms that only about 1 out of every 10 Detroiters give their city council a positive rating.
Eighty-six percent of the 400 eligible Detroit voters we surveyed give the Council a negative job rating, 10 percent say the Council is doing a good job, and 4 percent are undecided.
In November, Detroiters will have an opportunity to improve the Council's poor image when they elect 2 representatives at-large and 7 by neighborhood districts for the first in nearly 100 years.
Channel 7 pollster Bernie Porn says, "The council-by-district representation is a potential game changer for Detroiters and addressing the issues they are most concerned about. The council district members will deal with city-wide concerns but they will also be fighting for their individual neighborhoods. That should bring more representative government to the city."
Four candidates are running for the two at-large seats. If the election were held today, Saunteel Jenkins would be the top vote-getter with 27 percent. Brenda Jones would come in a close second with 26 percent. The largest percent are Detroiters who haven't decided yet who they will vote for.
Both Jenkins and Jones are Detroit City Council incumbents.
The poll was conducted by EPIC MRA September 17 – 19 and has a plus or minus margin of error of 4.9 percent.
