INTERVIEW: Education reformer Michelle Rhee on importance of public education to Michigan economy

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WXYZ) - Michelle Rhee gained quite a bit of attention for her efforts to bring about change in the public schools of Washington, D.C. She spoke with 7 Action News anchor Jeff Vaughn at the 2013 Mackinac Policy Conference.

"Education has to be the number one priority of policy makers in this nation and particularly in Michigan," Rhee said Thursday morning.

"If we want our economy to recover, we're going to have to focus on fixing the public education system," she stressed.

She spoke with us about "competitiveness" and said that American children need to know that they are competing with students throughout the world.

"We spend so much time trying to make children feel good about themselves that we've lost sight of taking the time to make them good at things."

Rhee also stressed the importance of "teacher quality."

"If you want to be a world-class city, you have to have a first rate education system," she said.
