INTERVIEW: Meijer Co-CEO Mark Murray on growth and expansion into Detroit, jobs in the city

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WXYZ) - Meijer is certainly a familiar shopping experience for most of Michigan. The company's Co-CEO, Mark Murray, spoke with 7 Action News anchor Stephen Clark about the retailer's growth.

The two sat down during a special 7 Action News webcast at the 2013 Mackinac Policy Conference.

Murray said Meijer is growing their business with new stores coming to additional states. More importantly, he talked about two stores that will bring the company into the city of Detroit.

"I'm very excited about Detroit," said Murray. "Detroit has 700,000 residents."

He pointed out that those residents will help fill the new ranks of Meijer store employees. Most jobs at the new store at 8 Mile and Woodward will go to Detroit residents, he estimated.

"We're very pleased to be going into the city," said Murray.

After that "Gateway Project" store is opened this summer, Meijer plans another store on the site of the old Redford High School.

"We will always follow where we see the opportunities," he said.
