DETROIT (WXYZ) - The Michigan Primary election is just a little more than two weeks away and the race for governor has tightened up considerably.
In a brand new EPIC MRA statewide poll released first to WXYZ and the Detroit Free Press, only 3 points now separate Republican Governor Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer.
If the November General Election were held today, 46 percent of the 600 likely voters surveyed say they would cast their ballot for Snyder.
Forty-three percent would vote for Schauer. Two months ago, Snyder had a nine point lead, 47 percent to 38 percent, in an exclusive WXYZ/Detroit Free Press poll.
Bernie Porn, president of Lansing-based EPIC MRA said, “The last few weeks have not been good for Governor Snyder. From charter schools to Michigan prisons, he’s been having his fair share of problems. As voters learn more about Schauer, his favorability numbers are going up.”
In the closely watched political contest for the seat now occupied by retiring U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Congressman Gary Peters is stretching out his lead.
If Michigan voters had to make their decision today, they would choose Democrat Peters over Republican Terri Lynn Land, 45 percent to 36 percent. That’s a three point increase from our poll in May of this year when Peters was in front 44 percent to 38 percent.
Pollster Bernie Porn believes Peters’ gain “is mainly tied to Land’s slippage and increasing negatives among Michigan voters.”
The survey was taken July 12 – 15 and has a plus or minus margin of error of 4 percent. Twenty percent of the respondents were reached on their cell phones.
