Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has been named the WXYZ-TV 2015 Newsmaker of the Year, and will be featured on a special edition of Spotlight on the News on Sunday.

Duggan, elected as Detroit's 75th mayor in 2013, ran the city without assistance from a state-appointed emergency manager for the first full year in 2015.

Under his watch, the city bus schedules and police emergency response times improved, transit workers and police union contracts were negotiated successfully and much more.

Each year, WXYZ selects one newsmaker it deems to have the greatest positive impact on the state of Michigan and Detroit region during the year.

The recognition began in 1994, with previous honorees including former Michigan Gov. John Engler, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and many more.

Duggan will be on Spotlight on the News on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. on Channel 7. He will discuss a wide range of topics including his vision for Detroit, city safety, Detroit Public Schools, his family and goals for the future.

Spotlight on the News, now in its 51st season, is Michigan's longest-running weekly news and public affairs television program. In Mid-Michigan it will air at 2:30 p.m. on 23.1 WKAR-HD in East Lansing and 6 p.m. on 23.2 WKAR World.
