Supporters battle to pass millage to fund Detroit Institute of Arts

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroiters will head to the polls next Tuesday, August 7, to have their say on whether or not the Detroit Institute of Arts should remain open.

The DIA's COO Annmarie Erickson answered questions and concerns on Action News.

If the millage passes in all three counties, it would raise approximately $23 million per year: $10 million in Oakland County, $8 million in Wayne County, and $5 million in Macomb County.

In exchange for their support, residents in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties will get to visit the DIA for free.

The DIA raises more than half of its $24 million budget every year through donations.

Art lovers and those who wanted to show their support for the historic art treasure showed up at Detroit's New Center Park on Tuesday for a save the DIA rally.
