Potential Detroit Police Department reorganization looming

(WXYZ) - Major changes could be coming in the Detroit Police Department, but who will be calling the shots?

The 7 Action News team has learned high level meetings have taken place between first responders and three members of the State Financial Review Team.  Mayor Bing's administration, however, was not in attendance.

DPOA President Mark Diaz called those meetings productive.

They were on Thursday at Cadillac Place, the State office building, and lasted more than two hours.

At the same time, the mayor and police chief are floating proposals/trial balloons that would move cops, but also eliminate some units including the city council executive protection, gang enforcement, community services, violent crimes task force, and some narcotics officers.

Mayor Bing's office would only say nothing is set and State officials declined comment on their private meetings.

A state takeover of Detroit could happen within weeks.  The latest audit shows the city is $327 million in the hole.
