(WXYZ) - Recent snowfall and ice buildup is a major concern for homeowners in metro Detroit.
Wayne Eddy, Vice President of Statewide Disaster Services says "There are some very important things to remember when cleaning your roof."
First, he says always use calcium chloride rather than salt which can damage shingles. A roof rake is best and always work off a ladder.
"You can also use a shovel, but never walk around on a slippery roof" says Eddy.
Also, he says it's best to address the roof issues as early as possible so you can avoid damage inside and outside. In worst case scenarios, an entire roof can cave in.
