DETROIT (WXYZ) - A 17-year-old neighbor has been charged with murder and arson in the death of 91-year-old Detroit man.
The teen, George Stewart, turned himself in following a raid at a home in the 20500 block of Bentler Street, on the city's west side, Tuesday morning.
The site of the raid was next door to where 91-year-old Paul Monchnik was found murdered after a fire on Monday. We're told he was a retired television repairman.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy issued a statement Wednesday saying, "The alleged facts in this case are that the defendant killed his elderly neighbor by beating him and attempting to burn the evidence."
Worthy said, "The word heinous does not even begin to describe this crime."
The prosecutor's office says Stewart, "Has been charged with First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, and Arson."
He is expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in 34th District Court in Romulus.
