How to help dog shot in face during home invasion

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A 6-year-old yellow Labrador named Niko is recovering after being shot in the face Saturday night during a home invasion.

HOW TO HELP: Affiliated Veterinary Emergency Service in Allen Park has set out to help Niko. You can donate by going to saveniko.chipin.com/ niko

The incident happened in the 6000 block of Stahelin around 11:00 p.m. Saturday.

The dog's owner, Gail King, was watching television when she heard what sounded like a firecracker. She went to go investigate and found her injured dog.

"He made a yelp sound, and he was on his back and went into a seizure. His arms and legs were flopping and there was blood everywhere," said King.

The suspect also shot at Gail, ripping off part of her right breast. She has since been treated and released from a local hospital.

Police are still searching for the suspected gunman.

"I'm sad, I don't want to lose my dog," said King.

Niko is still being treated by veterinarians. We're told that he will need $5,000 to $7,000 worth of reconstructive surgeries.

Some of the surgeries have already been done, but additional treatment is still necessary.

"Anybody helping my dog, I appreciate it.  Without your help, I would probably have to put Niko down," King said.
