DETROIT (WXYZ) - Despite promises and plans to secure Detroit vacant school buildings, many are open to trespassers and metal thieves are cashing in on buildings your tax dollars paid for.
Crockett Technical High School is a shell. The windows have been stolen, the metal pipes ripped out and the building gutted.
Despite the condition, illegal scrapping is still going on.
7 Action News Reporter Ronnie Dahl and her videographer Chris Jones were driving past the vacant school when they noticed a ladder propped up against a window. With the camera rolling, the ventured into the building.
Sounds of pounding led them directly to the thieves. When asked, the two guys admitted to scrapping. Then, they hid their faces and took off.
