Activists gathered for March Against Monsanto in Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A large group of activists gathered at Grand Circus Park in Detroit for the March Against Monsanto.

The activists are calling for the permanent boycott of Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs.

Millions of people are participating in marches in 52 countries.

The push against GMOs in food has gained steam in recent years and has a devout following on the Internet and social media channels.

Activists are against the use of herbicides and pesticides in crops and believe foods in Michigan should be labeled to identify produce that has been grown without the use of chemicals or genetic modification.

Protesters believe Monsanto is obstructing labeling attempts and is holding back research on public health risks.

According to activists, GMOs are responsible for health issues such as: organ damage, sterility, infant
mortality, birth defects, autoimmune conditions, allergies and increased cancer risks.
