DETROIT (WXYZ) - The 23-year-old who, police say, was driving the car that hit and killed 8-year-old Kamari Smith will appear in court to face new charges in the case.
Smith was hit May 19th and died in the hospital on Sunday.
Cortney Shields was originally charged with Reckless Driving and Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Injury or Death. The charges have now been amended to Second Degree Murder, Reckless Driving Causing Death and Failure to Stop When at Fault Causing Death.
Shields will be arraigned on the new charges at 2 p.m. today in 36th District Court. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
Eighteen-year-old Leonard Crosby has also been charged in the case. He is charged with Accessory After the Fact to a Felony. Crosby's charges are not expected to change.
