American Axle to close plant in Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) - American Axle is gearing up to close their Detroit area plant.

The company spokesman tells Action News they announced the closure in a series of town hall meetings Thursday.

He called it a very difficult but necessary business decision. Shifts in market demand is one of the main reasons heads of American Axle Manufacturing say the plant is closing its doors. About 300 salary and hourly workers are left standing here at the company.

Many of those workers were there when company was involved in a major dispute with the UAW over large wage cuts.

The dispute led to an 80-plus day strike in 2008.

The plant produces front, rear axles and steering linkage as a major supplier for General Motors. Officials say the closure is necessary.

The company is under a current labor agreement until february 25th. The plant is expected to close on or after February 26th.
