Arrest made after Detroit mother murdered, baby left with dead body

(WXYZ) - Detroit Police say an arrest has been after a mother was murdered and her baby was left with her dead body for days.

We're told Charamenek Johnson's former boyfriend is now in custody.

Johnson, 31, was found dead in a home in the 4000 block of Hazelwood with trauma to her head on Monday. Her baby girl, who can’t even walk yet, was left unattended with the body.

Detroit Police say the victim was found by her mother after she hadn’t heard from her in a while.

“The baby needed to be changed, baby was hungry,” said Anna Maria Borders, Johnson’s friend.  “And then the mother wasn't responding. Crying for her mama and her mama wasn't responding -- that's a bad feeling.”

Friends say Johnson lived for the little girl.

“All she wanted to do was make sure she had a life for her daughter, and that's what she worked for,” said Keysha McMillian, another friend of Johnson.

“For somebody to do this to her and take that baby from her, I can't even explain or have the words to explain or describe it at all.”

A neighbor describes the scary moments after the victim's baby daughter was found.

"One police officer went around the home and went into the baby's room and seen the baby just lying there," said the woman who wished to remain anonymous. "She didn't know the baby was dead or not until the baby popped open her eyes."

Police say the baby is out of the hospital and doing well.
