DETROIT (WXYZ) - The street known as Atwater, at the riverfront in Detroit, is getting a new name!
Detroit officially unveiled "Nelson Mandela Drive" as a tribute to Nelson Mandela International Day. The event began in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.
Following remembrances of Mandela's historic trip to Detroit in 1990, there was a one block "Walk to Freedom" procession from the building to the dedication site. Students from a DPS drum line and African drummers participated in the procession.
The official unveiling of Nelson Mandela Drive took place at noon.
The event was sponsored by Friends of Detroit City Airport, Tuskegee Airmen, and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Detroit Chapter. This is the only Nelson Mandela Day Detroit event sanctioned by the Nelson Mandela International Foundation.
