DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has announced that he has begun accepting his salary and is no longer donating it to charity.
Bing made the announcement is a news release. The release reads as follows:
For more than two years, I was delighted to donate my salary to the Detroit Police Department and personally contribute to keeping more police on the street. In the interest of transparency, I feel that it's important to disclose that I've begun to accept my salary. I will continue to support charitable organizations as I've done throughout my career.
The mayor salary is set by the City of Detroit Elected Officials Compensation Commission at $176,176. However, it is currently cut by 10 percent because of furlough days that city employees are required to take.
That means Bing is entitled to a salary of $158,558.
He began accepting his salary on July 1.
