Boating season begins, Cass Lake being patrolled

(WXYZ) - Memorial Day is the unofficial start to not only summer, but also boating season. Now, many local lakes are self-policed.

Due to budget cutbacks, the Oakland County Sheriff's Department stopped doing regular patrols on many area lakes.

To get patrols back on the water, some communities pay extra for the patrols.

In Keego Harbor, the police department has maintained its patrols on the Cass Lake.  The lake is one of the largest and busiest in Oakland County.  The sandbar makes it popular with boaters.

The Keego Harbor Police Department has remained committed to allocating resources for an officer to patrol the lake during the summer months.

Boaters on the lake tell us having a police boat on the water is a good way to keep people from getting out of control.
