DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit fire crews extinguished a morning apartment fire and then had to return to the scene when a worker later found the body of a woman inside that apartment.
Police and fire crews responded Saturday morning to the Mildred Smith Manor II apartments.
At about 4:30 a.m., firefighters responded, extinguished a fire and then left the apartment complex, located at 1300 W Forest, near Wayne State University.
Later, an apartment maintenance man was cleaning up the apartment that had caught fire when he discovered a woman's body within a bedroom hallway at about 6 a.m.
Investigations into why the initial fire crew did not discover the body have begun.
Police Chief James Craig says, in his entire career, he has never seen a situation where a body was left undiscovered after a fire response.
No official details have been issued on the woman's cause of death. Her name has also not been shared, pending notification of next of kin.
