The Church of Scientology will soon be opening it’s doors in downtown Detroit.

Church officials have confirmed plans to renovate a prime piece of real estate at Jefferson and Griswold.

The old Standard Savings and Loan building has been owned by the Church of Scientology for about a decade, but just recently the church applied for a building permit to do $8 million of renovations on the site.

Church leaders didn’t want to speak on camera, but they did release this statement from Karin Pouw, the Director of Public Affairs:

The Church of Scientology is pleased to confirm that the Church has been issued a building permit so we can proceed with the renovations of our new Church in Downtown Detroit. We have had Churches in the greater Detroit area since 1963, and are excited to be returning to downtown.

This relocation is part of the Church’s international program to service its parishioners in “ideal” Churches, and the Detroit Church of Scientology will be fully dedicated to serving its parishioners and the community.

The Church of Scientology has been experiencing a renaissance over the last decade with greater expansion than in the previous 50 years combined. In the last year alone, we have opened new churches in Copenhagen, Miami, San Fernando Valley, Auckland, Budapest, Sydney, San Diego and Harlem, adding to the more than 50 new churches opened in recent years.

In fact you can read about our latest Churches opened in Miami and San Fernando Valley by visiting our newsroom at www.scientologynews.org[scientologynews.org].

The Church of Scientology-Detroit is currently based in Farmington Hills, but that building is up for sale.

No word yet on when the new downtown location will be open.
