(WXYZ) - Detroit firefighters are battling a suspicious 3-alarm fire on the city's east side.
The fire began around 8 a.m. Sunday morning inside a vacant storefront on Mack at Lakewood. The building was the former home of a heating and cooling company and a pest control business.
When firefighters realized such businesses used to be in the building, a Hazmat Level 1 emergency was declared. They called all firefighters out of the building.
A deputy fire chief told Action News one firefighter was rushed to the hospital. He was overcome by smoke while knocking holes in the roof so water could make it inside to the flames. He's now being treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported.
Firefighters say they have been called to fight fires at this building recently, one within the last week, They suspect the cause is arson, but more investigation is needed to verify that.
