DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced a new citywide elementary school soccer league in partnership with Detroit PAL.
The Goal Detroit soccer will take place every Saturday until the fall.
It includes 700 students from 44 different teams across 15 Detroit Public Schools and charter elementary schools.
"Soccer is one of the world's most popular sports but until now, Detroit students largely have not had the same opportunity to participate in it, Mayor Duggan said. "Team sports in general are great fun and exercise, but they also help build self confidence and develop teamwork and leadership skills.
The opening day is Saturday, Sept. 27 and the season will run through November 1. Weekly games will be played at Coleman Young Park, Farewell Park, Patton Park and MIlan Park.
