DETROIT (WXYZ) - Mayor Mike Duggan has announced the first three major contributions to the Detroit Water Fund.
The fund is part of the city's 10-point water bill collection plan that was unveiled August 7. The plan was announced following protests over the city's shut off of water service to customers with outstanding bills.
Under the plan, eligible customers will receive matching benefits of up to 25% from the fund. However, they must make timely and regular payments on their existing water bills.
The contributions are being made by the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services and General Motors Company.
Other corporate donations beyond the initial three will be announced in the coming days.
Individual donations can be made online at www.detroitwaterfund.org .
