DMC breaks ground on new 'Heart Hospital' in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) - Rain did not dampen the ground breaking for the DMC's much anticipated new Heart Hospital.

The 78-million-dollar, five-floor facility will be home to the DMC's Cardiovascular Institute and its Cardio Team One.

"This is what should be happening in Detroit, right?! One-hundred-million-dollar investment in this facility.  It's been 30 years since a new hospital facility was built in Detroit when the city built Detroit Receiving," said Michael Duggan, President and CEO of the DMC.

What will make this 200-thousand-square-foot facility so unique is the collaboration of specialists who will be there.

"We have a team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, primary care doctors, endocrinologists, weight specialists that are top in the field that are now going to be able to work in a multi-disciplinary, synergistic fashion," said Dr. Theodore  Schreiber, President of the DMC Cardiovascular Institute.

Schreiber says this facility will serve one if the previously most underserved populations in the U.S. when it comes to cardiovascular disease.

The Heart Hospital will open in two years on an eight-acre site on the south end of the DMC campus
in Detroit's Midtown.
