DPS launches new text-messaging service for parents

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Public Schools will begin a new text-messaging system for parents Thursday aimed at communicating important information quickly.

Parents will receive a text message from the district today asking if they would like to participate in the program.

If you would like to take part in the program, you should respond with the words "YES," "OPTIN" OR "SUBSCRIBE" to the number 68453.

The messages will contain information about school closings, emergencies, classroom programs or attendance initiatives.

The district says messages will only contain relevant and timely information.

Parents can opt out at any time.
