Family in minivan T-bone a suspected drunk driver's car after witnesses say he ran a red light

Collision happened at W. McNichols and Lamphere

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A single Mom and her three children are shaken up after crashing into a suspected drunk driver who witnesses say cut them off.

It happened Friday morning around 8:00 at the intersection of W. McNichols and Lamphere St. on Detroit's west side.

"When you have a green light, you're just going. And then I looked up and the car was right there in front of me," said 28-year-old Jenifer Young.  "I couldn't even go around it or slam the breaks.  We just collided."

Her minivan crushed the two passenger side doors of the blue Ford Taurus.

The windshield wipers of the car were still running when 7 Action News cameras arrived on the scene.

Young was on her way to drop off her kids at day care before heading to work when the crash happened.

Her ex-husband arrived soon after and shot cell phone video of the wreck.  The video included a shot of a liquor bottled police propped up on the top of the Taurus.

The driver of the Taurus was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be some serious injuries.

Young told 7 Action News she and her 3 children are extremely lucky to be alive.

"As a Mommy, I got out of my car and hurried up and got the kids out, and bystanders helped me.  But in the back of my mind I'm just thinking of our transportation.  You know, I have to go to work, I have to go to school and pay the bills."

That minivan was her family's only vehicle.

But Young said she is grateful she and the children made it out okay.

She said she was going to take the kids to the hospital to get checked out as a precaution.

7 Action News ran the plate of the Ford Taurus and it came back to Rent-A-Jalopy on Telegraph.  The company does not release rental information.
