DETROIT (WXYZ) - Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a Detroit man in connection with the deaths of his two sons who died in a house fire on December 6.
Kevin Washington, 36, has been charged with two counts of Involuntary Manslaughter and two counts of Child Abuse in the deaths of 4-year-old Damion Washington and 1-year-old Mekhi Williams.
He is accused of leaving his two children in the home alone while visiting a neighbor. The Detroit Fire Department responded to the home on the 16830 block of Prairie and found the house engulfed in flames. The boys were found in an upstairs bedroom They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but did not survive.
"Children left home alone have been glorified and celebrated in movies. This case is a prime example of the real consequences of children left home by themselves," said Prosecutor Worthy.
Shortly after the fire, a witness gave an account that suggested arson, but arson investigators suspect the fire was accidental caused by space heaters and children playing.
Washington was arraigned and his bond was set at $100,000. His probable cause hearing is Dec. 19.
