DETROIT (WXYZ) - Action News has confirmed with Detroit Police that a man is under arrest in connection with the murder of Mariha Smith.
According to relatives of the young victim the person in custody is someone well known to Mariha's family. He was even at the home as relatives and friends frantically searched for the 5-year-old.
Police have not identified the suspect.
5-year-old Mariha went missing from her Detroit home on July 24. The same day, the body of a young child was found burned beyond recognition in an abandoned home.
DNA tests later confirmed it was Mariha.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office determined Mariha died of asphyxiation before her body was set on fire.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Funeral services were held Friday August 5 for five-year-old Mariha Smith at Triumph Church, 2760 E. Grand Blvd.
