(WXYZ) - For the 16th year kids in Detroit will get a chance to get free school supplies and get prepared for the academic year.
Greater Grace Temple on Detroit's west side hosts the annual event. It's become a tradition for thousands of struggling families. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. kids will have the chance to get an oral check-up, a haircut, all their immunizations and a health screening.
Melvin Epps, the Director of Communications for Greater Grace Temple says in years past families would line 7 Mile road waiting for the entrance to the parking lot to open.
This year was no different with families gathering ahead of opening. Their kids will get a backpack with crayons, pens, pencils, a notebook and a folder to start the school year.
For many families the opportunity to get their kids a health screening, dental check-up, haircut and new school supplies comes every so often and today is one of those times.
Epps tells 7 Action News that every year they host this back to school festival the crowd grows larger.
The kids will also be able to get a bike helmet, play on some inflatable amusement rides and hang out with friends.
