Greening of Detroit, nonprofit group, plans tree planting event in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) - A nonprofit group that supports urban reforestation efforts is kicking off its spring planting season in Detroit.

The Greening of Detroit on Saturday plans to plant several hundred trees at Rouge Park, with aims of getting roughly 1,300 in the ground at the park before mid-June. It is part of a broader effort to restore the park's ecosystem that included nearly 500 tree plantings there last fall.

In all this spring, the nonprofit aims to plant more than 2,400 trees. The Greening of Detroit is working with neighborhood groups and corporate partners. Green Thumb Challenges this spring are sponsored by Quicken Loans, Mercedes-Benz and Culligan.

Plantings take place each Saturday through June 7, except for April 19 and May 24. Details of volunteer opportunities are posted online.
