DETROIT (WXYZ) - 7 Action News crews responded to the scene of a HAZMAT Level 3 situation near Mt. Elliott and Rupert on Detroit's east side Thursday afternoon.
The large fire erupted at Chemical Technology, Inc. around 2:30 p.m.
A HAZMAT Level 3 is the most serious HAZMAT situation. The Detroit Fire Department had to notify the Governor in case help was needed.
A 3 block radius was evacuated, that included White Elementary School.
The evacuation was lifted just before 5 p.m. as the fire came under control. The EPA sent out crews to test air quality, and the air was found to be safe.
Arson Investigators responded, but did not find the fire suspicious. The owner of the business told firefighters they were mixing chemicals used to make adhesives when chemicals were dropped and sparked a fire.
No one was hurt.
Around 10 p.m. Thursday night, flames were spotted again on the upper level of what used to be Chemical Technology.
Detroit firefighters returned to the location and attacked the rekindled flames from above. The 40-thousand square foot business was gutted from the earlier explosion.
Neighbors tell Action News the business owner is known to be very responsible and very caring.
"I am shocked by the loss of the business." said long time resident Mary George. "He helps us out a lot in the neighborhood."
George said the owner often contributes to the block club and even hires people from the area to help with snow removal and other odd jobs.
