DETROIT (WXYZ) - The Detroit Fire Department was called out to the scene of a Level 1 HAZMAT situation at the Detroit Water and Sewerage's waste water treatment plant in Detroit.
A chlorine leak prompted the situation. The chlorine is used to purify water at the facility. The leak has been fixed.
We're told work crews were replacing batteries at the chlorination facility when there was a "power trip," that caused a momentary loss of power.
The plant is located on Jefferson. Workers were evacuated for a short time to prevent breathing issues and other side effects.
The plant has a scrubber system which prevented any chlorine from leaking into the atmosphere.
No injuries have been reported.
