DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police were on the scene of a reported home invasion on Thursday where a suspect has been shot and killed by the homeowner.
It happened on Penrod Street near Joy Road on the city's west side. Police say two intruders broke through a rear window. The homeowner heard glass shatter and went to see what was going on. Investigators say after he saw two intruders, he grabbed his handgun and fired.
Both of the men took off, but one of them, a 17 year-old, was shot. He collapsed on the driveway and died. The other man is still on the loose.
It's not clear if the homeowner was a registered gun owner, but Detroit Police Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson says "At this time, we don't have that information on that, but again ... as a homeowner, he has a right to
protect himself inside his home."
Detroit police spent almost 5 hours on the scene talking to the homeowner. It will be up to prosecutors to determine if the shooting was justified.
