(WXYZ) - DTE Energy says crews responded to nearly 9,000 illegal natural gas hook-ups last year and 2,200 so far this year, not just in Detroit but the entire metro area.
A huge explosion and fire at a house in Detroit Thursday night may have been fueled by an illegal gas hook-up.
DTE today says that owner requested the gas shut off a month ago because the house was being sold or to evict a tenant.
Matt doesn't want us to use his last name, because the thieves target DTE employees who come after them, by searching their names online. He showed 7 Action News several ways illegal hookups are done with rubber hoses and duct tape.
Patrick from DTE says when he moves in to remove an illegal hookup he's been confronted with thieves using guns and vicious dogs.
It is a felony to attack a utility worker and steal natural gas. The number to report attacks anonymously is 313-441-6698 and the number to call to report an illegal hook-up is 800-441-6698.
