Woman killed, man injured in house fire on Detroit's east side

DETROIT (WXYZ) - 7 Action News has learned that a 25-year-old woman has been killed in a house fire on Detroit's east side.

The home is located in the area of East Warren Avenue and Crane, near Gratiot Avenue.

We are being told that a man in his 40s was also injured in the blaze. Witnesses say he jumped out of a second-story window to escape the flames.

Fire officials say he suffered burns, broken bones and cuts from the broken glass. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A firefighter also suffered heat exhaustion. The fire chief on the scene says the firefighter was weak when he came out of the burning home, but took off his jacket and cooled off outside. He didn't need treatment.

Family members who showed up at the scene said the woman who died was Jennifer Edwards, a mother of two young children.

It's not clear at this time how the fire started, but the arson squad was called to the house to investigate.

The fire chief on the scene told 7 Action News the house had an illegal electrical hookup and that they will be looking into it to see if that was a factor in the fire.

While crews were cleaning up Saturday afternoon, a fight broke out between family members and friends down the block, although it's not clear what provoked the confrontation.

Police gripped their batons as they broke up the fight. One woman was caught on camera throwing a large stick or piece of wood at another man as he walked away. She was taken into custody.
