Jerome "The Bus" Bettis announces a donation for parent program at Detroit's new Mackenzie School

The $15,000 donation will teach leadership

Detroit (WXYZ) - NFL Star Jerome "The Bus" Bettis graduated from Mackenzie High School in Detroit just over 2 decades ago.  Thursday he toured the new $21.8 million Mackenzie Pre-K to 8 School opening this fall.

The school on Wyoming Street overshadows the now closed high school.

Bettis took the tour after announcing a donation that he hopes will encourage parent involvement at the school.  The money will be used for a program that teaches parents leadership skills at the school.

"When you get parents involved you make the entire school stronger," said Bettis.

The donation comes from Bettis' "The Bus Stops Here Foundation," but "The Bus" says his commitment to the students in Detroit schools doesn't stop here.  He says his goal is to show them that with hard work they too can live successful lives.

"This is my way of giving back," said Bettis.  "I want children to know that they have the tools for success.  They now just need to take advantage of them."
