Off-duty Lathrup Village police officer allegedly kills man during fight on Detroit's west side

DETROIT (WXYZ) - UPDATE: The 50-year-old Lathrup Village police officer has been released from custody pending possible charges. He is now on unpaid administrative leave pending the results of the Detroit Police investigation. And autopsy results on the body of Wayne Wheeler are pending.

Detroit police are investigating after an off-duty Lathrup Village police officer was arrested Monday night for allegedly punching a man and killing him during a fight.

We're told the neighbor who died is 41-year-old Wayne Wheeler. He reportedly jumped the fence of the officer's yard and started a fight. The home is located in the 8500 block of Whitcomb St., which is near Greenfield and Joy roads on the city's west side.

According to Detroit Police Capt. Harold Rochon, the officer and his neighbor had been in an ongoing dispute.

During the fight that happened around 7 p.m. Monday, the officer hit the victim in the head and killed him.

Sources tell us no weapons were found, and the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Capt. Rochon said they are still investigating, talking to witnesses and neighbors to get more information about the fight.
