Marine from Detroit killed in action; leaves behind three month-old son he never met

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A fallen Marine's three month-old baby will never meet his father after he was killed during a patrol in Afghanistan last Friday.

Private First Class Steven Stevens, 23, will be brought home to Selfridge air base on Wednesday. His funeral will be held on Saturday.

Family and friends say Stevens was an all-American guy who loved his family and country. His patriotism ran so deep that he left college at Florida A&M after two years to join the Marines.

It's not clear exactly what happened to Stevens, but his family believes shrapnel hit him after a militant launched a shoulder-fired missile at his patrol.

Stevens' grandmother says she'll never forget her grandson's smile or his voice.

"I'll miss his calls, the sound of his voice. I can't believe he's gone," said Dorothy Atkins, Stevens' grandmother.
