Mayor Bing's budget proposal includes more than 2500 layoffs, more cuts

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit City Council is reacting to a plan that would cut one in four city workers.

Mayor Dave Bing's budget proposal was submitted to city council Monday morning.

Under the proposed budget plan, more than 2,500 jobs would be cut through actual layoffs, early retirement, attrition and current vacancies. That's in addition to 1,000 job cuts that Mayor Bing discussed previously.

The city would also cut $250 million from its annual expenses.

Also under the proposal, the city's bus system would be privatized.

The lighting department would also be transferred to an independent authority.

This was the first of many meetings the council will hold to discuss the proposed budget plan.
