Prison sentence ends for Monica Conyers
DETROIT (WXYZ) - She's feisty and as of today she's free. Former Detroit City Council Member Monica Conyers ended her 37 month federal prison term Thursday.
She's been back home and working as a clerk in a Corktown auto shop and used car dealer for the last four months.
The owner Sam Hussein says she plans to continue working there, but was off Thursday expecting media to show up and to take care of personal business.
It was also the 84th birthday of her husband Congressman John Conyers.
Hussein says he deliberately does not ask about her federal conviction for changing her vote on the Detroit City Council on a controversial $1.2 billion dollar sludge contract.
Her former Chief of Staff and co-defendant Sam Riddle tells 7 Action News that he has not talked to Conyers but wishes her well.
Riddle is also out of prison and back in Detroit. Rider says Conyers has Detroit "street swag" and is young enough to still serve in the city.
Conyers may be best known for getting into a verbal altercation during a City Council session when she called fellow member Ken Cockrel "Shrek."
Conyers still has to report to a federal parole officer for two years.
