Nearly 1/3 of Detroit pregnancies end in abortion

DETROIT (WXYZ) - New numbers released from the state show nearly one third of pregnant women in Detroit got an abortion in 2012.

2012 is the most recent year for which data was available.

According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, there were more than 18,000 pregnancies in Detroit in 2012. More than 5,700 of them ended in an abortion, according to the department.

If the total number of women living in Detroit is taken into account, the abortion rate for the city was 37.9 percent in 2012, compared to the statewide average of 11 percent.

The state's average has hovered around 11 percent for the past ten years, but Detroit's abortion rate has continued to climb.

The study did not offer an explanation for the rising trend.
