New Detroit City Council takes oath of office

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit's new city council took the oath of office today at Wayne State University's Alumni House.

7 Action News was there as the nine elected officials took the oath. It was the culmination of a three day orientation for the group.

Wednesday's events began with encouraging words from Detroit's Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr. He told them that after the bankruptcy process is finished, he looks forward to giving back the best balance sheet they've had in Detroit for 50 years.

"The reality is we have to finish the trip together," says Orr.

"I think it was a very important message for all to hear. We are all all working together as a team," says Detroit City Council member Saunteel Jenkins.

Orr also said mayor-elect Mike Duggan and the city council will play a key role in city operations.

"We're on a ride. We have to finish the ride. The council and the mayor have to work together to get these issues solved," says Detroit City Council member Mary Sheffield.
