(WXYZ) - A new business opening up in Royal Oak is sparking an explosive debate.
The small building at the corner of Campbell and Lincoln has been sitting vacant for years, but not for long. Despite opposition from city leaders, a metro-Detroit businessman plans to open a fireworks store by Memorial Day.
Royal Oak's mayor believes the fireworks store will be a hazard to the neighborhood. Despite the concerns, city leaders can't prohibit the store from opening due to the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act. The law requires fireworks stores be treated as retail stores.
The store's operator says the products he will be selling are deemed safe by the State of Michigan. He also says the new store will bring jobs to the neighborhood.
