NHL warns fans to beware of Winter Classic counterfeit merchandise

DETROIT (WXYZ-TV) - The NHL is warning fans to lookout for counterfeit merchandise during the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Last year the NHL along with the Department of Homeland Security seized more than $250,000 worth of knock-off materials.

Homeland Security investigators say they are enforcing federal, state and local laws.

With temperatures that will be bone-chillingly cold, Red Wings and Maple Leaf fans are sure to be buying extra gear. But a s you shop for your favorite team's merchandise, here is what to look for when buy NHL-authorized clothing:

  • Shop at shop.nhl.com , the official online store of the NHL and all 30 teams, and other legitimate retailers, including official locations both inside and outside of Michigan Stadium, rather than buying questionable items from street vendors, flea markets, or other such sources.

  • Look for the NHL hologram sticker or hangtag and a sewn-in label identifying the merchandise as "official" and authorized by the NHL.

  • Beware of ripped tags, typographical errors, poor quality screen-printing, or irregular markings on apparel.

  • Be suspicious of items when the price is too good to be true.
