Occupy Detroit protesters will ask for two-week extension on permit

Permit expires at 11:59 p.m. Monday

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The clock is running out on the Occupy Detroit movement. Its permit to camp overnight expires at 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

Now organizers of the movement tell 7 Action News they plan on asking for a two-week extension on their encampment at Grand Circus Park.

The movement is planning a rally Monday night at 7:30 to celebrate the month long occupation of the park.

Members of the movement have been camping out at Grand Circus Park since Oct. 14, but they will soon have to find a new location. The community met Sunday morning to discuss its options.

"There's actually a lot of options on the table," said Juan Martinez, who is also with the movement. Martinez said several private parties have come forward to offer their space. If utilized, those locations could serve as a place to make banners and campaign material or for teach-ins and workshops.

The group, angered by the state of the economy and government, plans to continue with its campaign regardless of where it is headquartered. "Even if it's not camped, no matter what, this is not going away," promised Kiernan. "These people are not quitting."
