DETROIT (WXYZ) - In an effort to help enrich people's lives and their neighborhoods, Ford executive Mark Fields announced a $10 million investment aimed at creating a community resource center and summer camp in southwest Detroit.
The mission of "Operation Brighter Future" includes turning the usually empty Mexicantown Mercado building into the new Ford Resource and Engagement Center for job training programs, cultural services and a Gleaners client choice food service center.
The community center is expected to be operational late spring 2013.
Ford is also adopting the Patton Recreation Center in southwest Detroit where they will fund arts, a wide variety of athletics and the Brighter Future Summer Camp for youth.
"Operation Brighter Future" also includes a donation of two F-Series chassis that will be turned into new ambulances for the city of Detroit.
