Teen injured after shooting in parking lot of East English Village Preparatory Academy in Detroit

(WXYZ) - Police are searching for the people responsible for a shooting Friday night that has left a 19 year old in critical condition.

According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Darryl Smith was planning on meeting his uncle at the East English Village Preparatory Academy on Detroit’s east side.

The victim walked over to about 100 people were gathered outside of the school for a red carpet event when a vehicle pulled up.

Two people inside the car began shouting gang affiliations and opened fire.

At least one bullet hit Smith. Police have not elaborated on how many times he was shot .

Chief Craig told 7 Action News the victim was not targeted.  It is believed the shots were fired into the crowd.   The chief described the victim as a good Detroiter and added the gunmen are bad Detroiters.

He hopes with the help of  neighborhood watch group Detroit 300 to push the bad Detroiters out of the city.

Chief Craig would not comment on the names of the gangs involved in the shooting but would only say, “We know who you are.”

He held a press conference along with the victim’s family and Detroit 300 asking anyone in the community who has information to come forward and call 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
