Serial attacker who burns victims with blow torch strikes again, woman fights back with screwdriver

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A Detroit woman was able to get away from a serial rapist Wednesday morning by stabbing the man in the eye with a screwdriver.

Detroit Police believe the attacker is the same man who sexually assaulted two other women in July and used a blow torch to burn them.

Police say this latest attack took place just before 7:00 a.m. Wednesday as the victim, a woman in her 20's, was leaving a gas station on Plymouth near Meyers on Detroit's west side.

The man approached the woman from behind and put a gun to the back of her head.

He then forced her into a car, struck her several times, ripped off her clothes and began to burn her with the blow torch.

The victim was able to escape by stabbing her attacker in the eye with a screwdriver. She was, at least partially, nude when she fled to a nearby friend's house on the 11600 block of Appoline for help.

The man police are searching for is described as a black male with a dark complexion, in his early to mid 20's, standing 6' 2" and weighing approximately 185 lbs. He was armed with a handgun and the blow torch.

He took off from the scene in a small, 4-door, beige vehicle.

"There's a guy running around assaulting people and I felt like no one was really interested in it," said a woman who lives in the area who feels police have not tried hard to stop the rapist because he targets people "of the street."

Detroit Police say there was extensive investigation done on the prior attacks, and it doesn't matter who the victim is because investigators will take the same measures when solving all crimes .

Anyone with any information on a possible suspect, who should have an eye injury, is urged to call Detroit Police Sex Crimes Unit at (313)596-1950 or Crime Stoppers at 1(800)SPEAK-UP.
