DETROIT (WXYZ) - Scrappers are ripping apart a former high school in southwest Detroit, and though the building is owned by Detroit Public Schools, nothing is being done about it.
State Representative Rashida Tlaib went to high school here, and people are saying windows four to five stories high are being removed from the building.
It closed in 2002, and Tlaib has asked DPS to do something before scrappers destroy the entire building. Dozens of people have been arrested, but the doors are still open.
A spokesperson for DPS tell 7 Action News they simply don't have the resources to keep the building secure. A potential owner interested in buying the property says all he can do is shake his head and wait.
