Shots fired outside the home of missing 5-year-old Mariah Smith

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A tense day and evening at the home of a 5-year-old missing girl exploded in gunfire Tuesday night as Action News Reporter Tom Wait and Photographer Steve Zayac were preparing to go live for the 11:00 p.m. newscast.

Family and friends gathered throughout the evening at the house on the 3800-block of Burlingame on the city's west side. Around 10:30 p.m. an argument broke out and several people started fighting outside the home. Minutes later the sound of gun shots filled the air.

As people scattered and ran down the street it did not appear anyone was hit. Police and paramedics were in the area soon after the chaos erupted.

5-year-old Mariha Smith went missing on Sunday morning from her home. Investigators say she was kidnapped. Around the same time of the abduction a child's burned body was discovered in an abandoned house set on fire just a mile from where Mariah vanished.

Police have not linked the two cases yet as they wait for DNA tests to come back so they can identify the charred remains.

Mariha's mother Konesha has been questioned by police and released. But her sister and her boyfriend are still in custody. DPD will not confirm any arrests.
